This Colonna farm was once used to raise horses and it’s origins date back to 1200. Over much of the intervening period the family properties also included much of the surrounding countryside.

The feudal estate of Paliano was given to the Colonna family in the 15th cent. by Pope Martin V, himself a member of the family. It remained in family's possession until the middle of the next century when it was confiscated by Pope Paul IV. Returned to the family in the 16th century has remained in its hands to this day.

Amongst the most interesting buildings connected the family in the area are:
The Palazzo Ducale and the Collegiate Church of S. Andrea which hold the remains of many family members. In this beautiful Baroque church one can admire some splendid eighteenth paintings. The palace which is still a Colonna property was constructed in the century before by Prince Philip I Colonna.

The town of Paliano itself twists around its dominant fortress designed to protect the entire valley in Medieval times. It is surrounded with a double wall, all the better to make it impregnable against an enemy's attack. The fortress which from 1300 was a residence of the Colonnas was taken over by the state in 1800. Today it is used as a maximum state prison.
