Just a few kilometres from the agriturismo is the historic town of Paliano whose origins date back to Medieval times. The town nestles between the Prenestini and Ernici hills and has a history closely linked to that of the Colonna family as it was one of their main centres. The period of its major development was during the 17th Century and it was during this time that its most notable buildings were constructed: the Palazzo Ducale for Prince Filippo Colonna. The Collegiate Church of San Andrea, whose crypt contains the tombs of many of the family members, and the fortress (la Fortezza) which dominates the entire valley of the Sacco river Well worth seeing is the fresco cycle, attributed to the artist Pablo de Cèspedes which shows the triumphal entrance to Rome of one of the family’s most famous ancestors, Marcantonio Colonna, after the battle of Lepanto (1571) in which he was victorious admiral commanding the Papal fleet.
Paliano is also renowned for its lovely surrounding countryside and landscapes. One can especially admire the hill scapes close to the nature reserve of Selva (Parco Naturale della Selva), this reserve is home to many aquatic species.
Fondazione Zerinthya, close to Cervinara, is another ancient town of the Colonnas. The Fondazione hosts a permanent collection of such artists as Pistoletto, Schifano, Accardi, Appel, Kounellis and Sol Lewitt.
